Talent-Targeted Teaching and Learning

Talent-Targeted Teaching and Learning is a brain-based model for talent development that fosters students’ content expertise, metacognition, and creative problem solving abilities.

All of us have talent potential, capacities or aptitudes that can be developed.  An aptitude is a particular fitness, a natural inclination, which may not yet be expressed, but can be trained.  The focus on aptitude reflects the dynamic nature of talent.

Aptitudes like creativity, logical reasoning, persistence, and leadership undergird achievement across disciplines.  Other aptitudes support achievement in specific fields, such as the Humanities and STEM.

In the Talent-Targeted Teaching and Learning modules, teachers and students set talent development goals aligned with national content standards. Teachers observe and assess students’ growth using each lesson module’s Talent-Targeted Task rubric.  Students are empowered by using the Talent Development rubrics to self-assess and record their progress on a Talent Development Continuum.

Curriculum is differentiated using the Design for Innovation Framework, 15 evidence-based principles to develop students’ content expertise and creative problem solving skills.  Design for Innovation principles are transferrable to other curricula, making this truly a teaching and learning model.

Instruction is delivered using the Essential Strategies which foster engagement, motivation, collaboration, and higher level thinking to implement the content standards and talent development goals. Throughout the lesson modules, teachers are prompted to observe and record evidence of students as they exhibit the targeted talent aptitudes.

Assessment is formative and performance-based in the content discipline with talent development rubrics for the talent-targeted goals.  Students advance their strengths while discovering and developing new talents.  The focus on aptitude reflects the dynamic nature of talent and ensures that every student is challenged every day.
